What You Need to Know before visit Veliko Tarnovo ?

Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famous as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture.

The old city is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora raising amidst the meanders of the Yantra.

Tsarevets housed the palaces of the Bulgarian Emperors and the Patriarchate, as well as a number of administrative and residential edifices surrounded by thick walls.

Trapezitsa was known for its many churches and as the main residence of the nobility. In the Middle Ages it was among the main European centres of culture and gave its name to the Tarnovo Artistic School of architecture, painting and literature.

Transport: How to visit Veliko Tarnovo ?

Situated in Central Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo is within easy reach of the main cities in the country.

You can choose to travel by bus or train from Sofia, Varna, Burgas or Plovdiv. Unfortunately, the town has no airport and the nearest one in Gorna Oryahovitsa is not open for passenger traffic. It is possible to fly to Sofia or Varna and then take the bus or train to Veliko Tarnovo.

By bus

The easiest (and probably fastest) way to reach Veliko Tarnovo is by bus. The buses from Sofia run almost every hour at the price of 18 Bulgarian levs (approximately 9 Euro). It takes about 3 hours to travel from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo.

The bus service from Varna is the same. There are buses running from Plovdiv and Burgas but they are not as frequent as those from Sofia or Varna.

By train

Veliko Tarnovo’s railway station is quite small. The train to and from Plovdiv can be caught from there. If you want to go to Sofia or Varna, it is better to go to the station in Gorna Oryahovitsa and take the train from there. It can be reached by bus, minibus or taxi.

1. Visit the Church of Sveti Dimitur

This church is situated in the neighborhood of Asenova, Veliko Tarnovo, and it is dedicated to Saint Demetrius, patron of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.

Asen and Petur nobles began a revolt against Byzantine power and this led to the creation of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, the time of the czars Tsarevets. Petur became tsar.

Pentaedrico has an apse and a design in a cross domed with a narthex and a flat space in the apse. It was part of a large monastery attached to the southeast.

The city of Lyaskovets is located 10 km northeast of Veliko Tarnovo and 2 km from the city of Gorna Oryahovitsa. Lyaskovets boasts a unique museum dedicated to gardening and vegetable production.

In the 18th century, these local inhabitants on the periphery of the Ottoman Empire decided to produce and market their vegetables on a large scale – potatoes, tomatoes, okra, squash, peas, eggplant, carrots, and peppers.

Learn some history at the Tsarevets and Trapezitsa

Both Veliko Tarnovo hills – Tsarevets and Trapezitsa and the fortresses situated around them, represent the power and majesty of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 – 1393).

The fortress Tsarevets is nowadays one of the most visited landmarks in the country.

The fortress complex includes the Royal Palace, the fortress wall, the Patriarchal church and Baldwin’s Tower, named after the Latin Emperor Baldwin of Flanders, captured during the Battle of Adrianople in 1205 by Tsar Kaloyan.

According to the legend, Baldwin was imprisoned in this tower after the battle and died there.

Explore the Asen’s Monument

Asenid The monument commemorates the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and its czars.

Crossing the Stambolov bridge we accessed a nearly half island or peninsula formed by the river in its winding Yantra Veliko step.

In it Asen, Petur, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II are represented atop their horses with a great sword which at a glance looks like a large black obelisk.

These four czars ruled between 1185 and 1241. The Monument Asenid welcomed us to the city the first day of our trip as we gazed at it from the balcony of the hotel as well as from any River City viewpoint.

From the monument, you can see the remains of old city houses on the edge of the slopes. There are Two stamps of Veliko who remain in the memory of the monument. It is worth seeing!

Visit Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The church of St. Peter and St. Paul are from the 13th century and lost its roof in the notorious earthquake of 1913.

It was restored afterwards. There are two stone colonnades on both sides of the nave and there are fragments of original frescoes on the left side of the entrance.

The south wall scenes were painted in 1441. The outside was painted in the 17th century. It was here the Ottomans killed 110 Bulgarian nobles after the conquest of 1393. After this victory, the Patriarchate and its library were relocated to this small church.

The last Patriarch of Veliko, Eutimus, served for two years in this place. It is supposedly open every day from 9-18.

Arbanasi is situated on a high plateau, 4 km from Veliko Turnovo. In the 17th century the local traders were famous and they traded throughout the Ottoman Empire.

The houses of rich traders of this period resemble small fortresses. They have a strict and austere appearance, without balconies and verandas, with barred windows and tightly overlaid doors. Inside, however, the houses are rich and sumptuous.

The decoration of all doors, windows, closets, ceilings is extremely rich with wood carvings and plaster elements.

Typical of the Arbanasi houses is that they are constructed in a way, which allows their inhabitants to live in them for a long time and only go out to bring some water from the well in the yard.
